A Glimpse of History
The Institut für Stadtgeschichte (Institute of Local History) has the function of preserving the historic heritage of the City of Frankfurt, making it accessible and communicating it as widely as possible. We collect the City's administrative files as well as any documentary material that is of relevance to the history of Frankfurt.
Based on the Historical City Archives, the Institute is among the most significant archives in Germany, with material dating back to the early Middle Ages. Despite considerable losses during the Second World War, its extent and depth still match most similar municipal archives.
